The AI Delivery Compass

Quarterly Business Reviews Must Look Forward

Practical ideas about applying AI to project artifacts, reporting, and portfolio leadership.

A quarterly business review should not be a three-month history lesson. It should use recent performance to improve the next set of decisions. When I develop quarterly business reviews, I want the discussion to move beyond completed activities and project counts.

A useful QBR should address what value the portfolio delivered, which strategic outcomes advanced, where forecasts proved inaccurate, what risks are becoming systemic, where capacity is constraining execution, and which initiatives should accelerate, change, pause, or stop. AI can strengthen this process by analyzing trends across project status, milestone movement, resource demand, financial performance, risks, dependencies, and benefits. It can identify patterns that are difficult to see one project at a time.

For example, five projects may appear healthy individually while depending on the same constrained team during the same six-week period. That is not simply a project risk. It is a portfolio decision.

The QBR should create a direct line between strategy, capacity, execution, and measurable value. Review the past. Understand the pattern.

Then choose what the organization will do differently next.
